Hobo With a Shotgun (1/4/12)

Movie TwoHobo With a Shotgun

I must admit I have always been a sucker for a great low-budget movie. Violence and outrageous plot are usually associated acts. Hobo With a Shotgun is certainly no exception to this rule.

Originally conceived as a fake movie trailer for the Grindhouse double-feature, Hobo With a Shotgun is…Well, EXACTLY what it sounds like. That is its charm. Unfortunately, as with many other exploitation flicks, it can be a little thin if you’re looking for things like plot.

Violence and gore abound, the movie is enjoyable if you know what you’re getting into and let’s face it – You know exactly what you’re getting into. Also, since it’s Canadian in origin there’s a cameo for one of the Trailer Park Boys, which I think is mandatory for Canadian productions.

Overall the movie overstays its welcome and even the things that make it great start become dull. I was a bit let down but would still recommend it for fans of the genre. It is available on Netflix Instant Watch.

I give it 2 armed unshaven hobos out of 5.

MST3K – Gamera (1/3/12)

MST3K GameraMovie One

The first movie I watched of 2012 was a classic Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode where Joel and robot crew watch Gamera. As a kid I loved Gamera but I think all kids like giant things crushing smaller things. Plus he could fly!

As a movie, Gamera is terrible, but when MST3K watches a bad movie it’s almost always a good time. For the uninitiated, the point of MST3K is watching bad movies while the cast cracks wise throughout. The entire package was quite enjoyable. If you’re a fan of MST3K it’s a gem and if you ARE new, it is the perfect place to start.

Available on Netflix Instant Watch (among many other great MST3K episodes).

I give it 3 flying giant turtles out of 5.
