Movie Twenty Nine
Lonesome Jim is billed a comedy and if it’s meant to be a comedy it is possibly the most depressing and unfunny one I’ve ever seen. The movie is about a guy whose life is idling and he has to move back in with his parents. Sure, there are funny moments but even as a black comedy there isn’t much to laugh at.
Directed by Steve Buscemi, which is interesting, Lonesome Jim seems to me like it is one of those indie films that is fine being low-key and middling. The characters are all relatable and, for the most part, likeable. I think everyone will identify someone they know as the main character Jim (Casey Affleck). He is not a loser, but he doesn’t seem interested or equipped to deal with pulling himself out of his rut.
Jim meets a girl, played by Liv Tyler, that helps him deal with his situation. The movie is close to being formulaic, but still interesting to watch. Lonesome Jim isn’t bad, it just feels too familiar and as a result is fairly forgettable.
I give it 3 creepy cut out smiles out of 5.
